Seldom does the fear of the Lord enter the heart of the proud and self centered man, but instead the fear of not being the center of attention or being number one is the driving force of his life.
1Ti 6:
3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, [even] the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

The proud man spends his whole life seeking to gain recognition from others by trying to attain some lofty office or goal.
Isa 2:
12 For the day of the LORD of hosts [shall be] upon every [one that is] proud and lofty, and upon every [one that is] lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

Such a man will seek to destroy his competitors with lies and slander, while making high minded claims about his own abilities and prospects.
Psa 94:
4 [How long] shall they utter [and] speak hard things? [and] all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?

Brethren, what is amazing is how many gullible people will follow after and put their whole trust in these proud and vain will-of-the-wisps.
Instead, Brethren, put your whole trust in the Lord our God for in Him alone can you safely trust.
Psa 40:
4 Blessed [is] that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.
Psa 146:
3 Put not your trust in princes, [nor] in the son of man, in whom [there is] no help.
